On a more solemn note, today we also pause to remember all those who lost their lives in the First World War, as today marks the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel. Over 700 Newfoundlanders were wounded, missing or killed on that first day of battle, and over 300 lost their lives.

ReplyDeleteAnd yes, we bow our heads in memory of those lost - Äiti one day would like to see the war graves in northern France as she feels only then can she begin to understand the enormity of the sacrifice made.
