Mancat & Meezer Monday: A Stroll!

Saturday was a beautiful day for a stroll! It wasn't too hot or too humid (unlike most of the rest of the week, which was very hot and humid, we had nice weather on Friday and Saturday). So, our humans put both of us in our stroller on Saturday afternoon, and we went for a walk! We had a wonderful time, walking with both of our humans, and we saw a lot of wonderful sights! We really enjoyed sniffing the air! There were so many interesting smells! We also heard a lot of birdies, and even caught sight of a few!

It was also very exciting because we walked right past the military base where our dad works! It was very cool to see where he goes to work every day.

(Not So) Easy Like Sunday Morning

Our humans ran the München Stadtlauf (Munich City Run) today. They ran the half-marathon, which was 21 km (13 miles). It was very humid out, and fairly warm, but fortunately most of the course was well-shaded. The race started downtown at Marienplatz (right in front of the Rathaus - the City Hall), then they ran through the Englischer Garten, which is a huge park in the middle of Munich (with lots of shade) and then they finished back in Marienplatz.

Due to the heat, and especially the high humidity (it was 94% humidity when our humans left the house this morning), they ran very slow, but they finished! They are now going to relax for the rest of the day.

We think relaxing is good. This is what we were doing while they were running:

Frootbat Friday

Merlin: So you all heard about what a naughty boy I am yesterday. Well, what can I say? I'm almost 10 months old and I'm a Meezer Sphynx. What do you expect? Dragonheart isn't so perfect either. He.... Well, he doesn't cover in the litterbox! So there. *sigh* Any of you live with a "perfect" sibling?

Dragonheart: Merlin, you should know that if you behaved better, some things, like having your ears cleaned, and bath time, would go a lot quicker! See, I'm smart enough to have learned that if I sit there quietly, and let our humans clean my ears, clip my claws, or give me a bath, it goes much quicker when I'm not trying to escape from them.

Merlin: Well, at least I make up for it by purring all the time! About the only time I'm not purring is when I'm asleep!

Thursday Thirteen: El Destructo

Thursday ThirteenDragonheart: So yesterday, many of you commented that you couldn't envision either of us being naughty. Well, you would be correct if you were talking about me. I'm the "good boy." Merlin, however, has acquired the nicknames "El Destructo", "Psycho Kitty", and "Little $h!t". So here are:

13 Naughty Things that Merlin Does

  1. Attacks the pictures hung on the wall and tries to knock them down.

  2. Attacks the list of emergency phone numbers posted on the wall next to the phone. Chews it up and tries to tear it down. (See photo to the right) Attacks other papers and the telephone book in the corner by the phone.

  3. Jumps on the table when our dad is eating and tries to eat the food off his plate. When told to "get down" and put back on the floor, immediately jumps back up and tries to get the food again.

  4. Comes running at warp speed across the room, jumps on our dad and head butts him. When our dad is busy and trying to work on the computer, runs up to him and head butts him, rubbing his face all over our dad's face. The minute our dad puts the laptop down and tries to play with Merlin, Merlin runs away, uninterested.

  5. Jumps up on the table and attacks any papers or other items on it, whapping pens onto the floor and then using them as toys.

  6. Chews and claws at any cardboard in the house, destroying it, including cardboard boxes used for storage. (See photo to the right)

  7. Walks and jumps all over our dad's laptop keyboard, causing programs to do strange things and leaving our dad frustrated as he tries to figure out just what Merlin did.

  8. Constantly tries to jump up on the dressers in the bedroom, attacking any objects on the dresser or whapping them onto the floor.

  9. Squirms and tries to escape from his "kitty burrito" when his ears are cleaned, his claws are clipped, or he's being bathed (obviously, he can't be held in a burrito while being bathed, but he is restrained, and he constantly tries to escape)

  10. Attacks the headphones attached to the treadmill, pulling them down and tangling them up. He also tries to jump onto the treadmill while one of our humans is running on it!

  11. Totally destroys and shreds any paper towel left out in the open.

  12. Gets into the garbage. Knocks the garbage can over or fishes "toys" out of the garbage, playing with the trash and strewing garbage everywhere.

  13. Jumps onto the drying racks that clothes are drying on, or knocks the drying racks over, putting all the clothes onto the floor.
BONUS: (We both do this): Dragging litter throughout the house!

Meezer Rule Wednesday: Napping

Merlin: It doesn't matter what you look like when you're napping, as long as you're comfortable! Of course, if you look cute and adorable, it's easier for your humans to forgive you when you're naughty later.

Cats on Tuesday: Toesday

Cats on Tuesday

We Sphynx have unique toes! Compared to other breeds, we have long toes and thick paw pads. :) Some say our thick paw pads give us the appearance of walking on cushions!

We Sphynx tend to get dirty toes, because we have no fur to absorb the oil our skin secretes. So oil builds up on our toes, in our claw sheaths, and on our claws, and attracts dirt and dust. So our toes, paw pads, claws, and claw sheaths need to be cleaned weekly, just like the rest of us!

(Click any of the photos below to see a larger image. If you do, you can see the tiny bit of hair that we have, especially on Merlin's toes!)

Mancat & Meezer Monday: Beat the Heat

As we mentioned yesterday, we don't have air conditioning. So since it went up to 34°C (93°F) yesterday (and it was very humid), this is what we were doing all day:

Dragonheart: Our dad calls this my "shrimp pose"
Dragonheart
Merlin: Both of our humans were laughing at me, saying I looked silly! Okay, they also said I was very cute. They were happy that I was being quiet and sleeping, instead of causing havok and creating destruction

Easy Like Sunday Morning

While our humans are out running and biking, we are enjoying the wonderful snuggle sack that Queen Snickers and Empress sent us, that their mom made!

Dragonheart
Merlin

Some of you have asked about the weather in Munich. Usually it is quite nice, with summer temperatures in the mid-20s (Celcius) so 25-26°C (78-80°F) and reasonable humidity (50-60%). We generally have a couple of weeks of really hot weather (over 30°C or 90°F) and high humidity (80-100%). These really hot, humid weeks are nasty, since most German homes and businesses do not have air conditioning. The Germans don't "believe" in air conditioning and many consider it unhealthy. When our humans had a house hunting trip to find a place to live in Munich, our mom wanted a place with air conditioning, but they couldn't find one, because they don't exist! It is almost unheard of for a home to have air conditioning, and most hotels don't have air conditioning either. When our humans first moved to Germany and were waiting for their household effects to arrive (so they could move into their place) they were staying in hotels. Well, they arrived in the middle of a heat wave, and to find a hotel that had air conditioning, that still had rooms available, they had to go to a city North of Munich. Only a few hotels in Munich itself had air conditioning, and they were all booked up.

Our mom really suffers when it is very hot and humid, but sadly, we can't install any air conditioning unit in our home. Our windows don't open like North American windows - most German windows tilt open from the top or bottom, forming like a v-shape, or else they swing open like a door. Most windows don't have screens, so swinging them open like a door isn't an option (since we could escape). Our humans have installed fabric mesh in our windows, so that bugs don't fly inside, but we could easily get through the fabric mesh if we wanted to. So our humans generally just tilt the windows open to let air in.

There are stand alone air conditioning units available, but they all require a vent to the outside. They all have vent hoses that need to go through the walls, and vent to the outside (that's how the hot air is removed). Since our humans don't own our home (they are only renting since they are only in Germany for 4 years), they aren't allowed to cut holes in the walls for vents. The walls are also concrete, so it makes it really hard to cut holes in it, even if we were allowed (it also makes hanging things on the walls difficult!)

We are supposed to have really hot, humid weather all this week, so our mom will suffer. She does have a "cool air" unit for the bedroom - basically a fan that you put water and ice inside, and the air moves over the ice and provides some cooling that way. It's better than just a fan, but it's not as good as air conditioning.

So that's summer weather in Munich, at least since our humans moved here (summer 2006). Generally quite nice, but with a couple of weeks of nasty hot, humid, sticky weather. We already had one very hot, humid week at the end of May, and this coming week is supposed to be really hot and humid too. Then we'll probably have another week or two of the yucky weather in July and another in August, if this summer is similar to the past two summers.

Meezer Rule Wednesday: Napping Spots

Merlin: Any collection of soft objects immediately becomes a bed for the cats!

Dragonheart and Merlin

Here, Dragonheart and I are napping together on a collection of clean sheets and a clean quilt that our humans left piled up in a laundry basket. It was a very cozy spot for a nap! (And no, they weren't warm. We don't have a dryer, since there is no place to hook one up in our home, and we can't cut a hole in the wall for the dryer vent since we are renting. So we hang everything to dry.)

Cats on Tuesday: Snuggle Safe

Cats on Tuesday

(Once again, our typist put her morning workouts ahead of our blog post! As if her workouts are more important than us!)

So yesterday, a bunch of you were asking us about this fellow:

This is Bruno, our Snuggle Safe! He's a nice, soft pillow that helps to keep us warm in the winter! There's a Snuggle Safe disc (the pink circular thing below) that gets heated in the microwave:

After it's been heated, the pink disc gets put inside the cat-shaped pillow (Bruno), and then the pillow is zipped shut:

Then Bruno, the Snuggle Safe continues to give off heat for up to 10 hours, and is safe for us to use!

Our Snuggle Safe comes in very handy in the winter, especially if we have to go out in our PTUs (cat carriers), for example, if we have to go to the vet. The Snuggle Safe is also very useful when our humans are running on the moving sidewalk (treadmill) in the winter, and have the patio door cracked open to let some fresh air in. We also appreciate his warmth when the windows are opened during the winter for a brief period of time (our home, like most homes in Germany, is made of concrete, and needs to be "aired out" every day in the winter).

In the winter, our humans will put our fleece blanket on top of Bruno, so we can burrow under the blankets, and enjoy the heat that Bruno gives off.

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there, both human and feline dads!

We love our dad very, very much! We are so happy that although he is allergic to regular, furred cats, he isn't allergic to Sphynx! He is the best cat-dad in the world! We love you, dad! Happy Father's Day!
