Friday Adventures
Hello friends! So today we are hitting the highway, and heading to our new city.
This is what we travel in, which is securing fastened with seatbelts to the back seat of the car:
It's called a Car-Go and it's made by Sturdi Products. Dragonheart and Merlin travelled across most of Canada, twice, in it! (From Ottawa, Ontario to Edmonton, Alberta, staying each night in a new hotel, and then doing the same thing from Edmonton, Alberta, to Guelph, Ontario). Devi has never travelled in it, so we'll see what happens! It's also a much shorter trip today (about 5 hours on the highway).
Then we will be staying in a new hotel for about two weeks. Our new home won't be ready until October 13th, which is our closing date, so we won't move in until October 14th. Our dad will be going to work most week days while we are in the hotel in our new city, but he'll be with us in the evening and on weekends, and our mom will be with us most of the day (when she's not out running, or sorting things out for us, and the like).
So forgive us if our posting continues to be spotty. We will visit our friends when we can!

Tuxie Tuesday: Loading
Hello all! Dragonheart here. So today the movers are at our house again, this time they are loading. Once again, our dad is there, as he needs to check off the boxes on a list as they load them onto the truck, and our mom is here with us at the hotel.
As you can see, I am enjoying getting some of my Sphynx oil on the nice white bedsheets on the hotel bed. But I also have my nice blanket from home to burrow underneath, and you can see Merlin's special fleece blanket in the corner of the photo. It's a little out of focus - sorry about that!

Flying Frootbat Friday
Hello all! Devi here! We are excited today because our dad comes home tonight! Yay! And we won't be separated any longer, except for short trips he'll have to make in his new position.
Sunday we move into a hotel again, and then we'll be in hotels until October 14th, at the very least, because the closing date on our new home in our new city is October 13th. The boys have lived in hotels for that long before, when they moved from Germany back to Canada. We don't think I've ever done that, so it will be a new experience for me!
So some of you read on Merlin's Facebook page that we might be getting a new sister in the new year. Yes, it's true. You see, before I came along, when the boys weren't blogging any more, they had a little sister named Arwen. We haven't talked about her yet because our mom still gets really teary eyed thinking about her. You see, they lost Arwen when she was 2.5 years old, in January 2015, to Feline Infectious Peritonitis. But Arwen came from a very good breeder who has a health guarantee on all her kittens for five years, and after she removed Arwen's parents from her breeding lines, she offered up a new kitten whenever our humans were ready. Well, before that happened, our humans met me, a Sphynx in need of a new home, and so they rescued me. Of course, the offer for the new kitten was still open. We were going to get a new little sister in November of this year, but the litter that the breeder had that would have been 4 months old in November didn't have any tortoiseshells or calicos in it, and our mom is holding out for one of those, don't ask me why! The breeder anticipates some torties or calicos in her next litter, though, and the kittens from that litter would be old enough in January to come to their new homes, so that's when we might get a new family member. Another Sphynx, because our dad is allergic to furred cats.

Tuxie Tuesday: Mom's Home
Hello friends! Dragonheart here. I am happy today because our mom is back home from the Army Run. Our dad is still in our new city this week, but he'll be home on Friday, and then all of us move into a hotel on Sunday! The vet student who was looking after us was very nice, and made sure we all took our medication, but she was not as nice as our mom and dad. For those who asked: we currently live in a city with a Veterinary College, and a number of vet students have created a business where they do pet sitting. It's a pretty good setup, and we have always been very well looked after by the vet students.
Our mom and dad had a good weekend at the Army Run, although our mom is a little disappointed that the race photographers didn't get any good photos of her and our dad on the course. She likes having photos to make digital scrapbook pages with.

Frootbat Friday: We are not amused
Hello friends. So, we are not amused. Our humans are once again abandoning us. Okay, so they aren't really, but they are going away for the weekend, to run something called the Army Run. To be fair, it is for two good causes: Soldier On and the Military Families Fund
– two official funds of the Canadian Armed Forces that provide
assistance to ill and injured soldiers and military families in need.
We have a veterinary student coming to look after us, so we will be well taken care of, but we still prefer having our mom and dad home. Especially since dad has been gone all week, working in the city we are moving to soon.
So, we are not amused. We will be back to posting on Tuesday, friends.

Tuxie Tuesday: Update on Us
Hello all! Dragonheart here. I've discovered that the desk makes a wonderful spot to lie in the sun, now that it's in a new position, after being moved around during the staging of our house.
We weren't around on the weekend, and won't be next weekend either, because currently our dad is only home on the weekends, so we and our mom are spending lots of time with him when he's home. He had to report for duty at his new posting the day after Labour Day, and that city is about a 4 hour drive away, so he stays there during the week, and comes home on weekends. He will continue to do that until we actually move! Although next weekend our humans are going up to Ottawa for a very special race, the Army Run, which raises money for Soldier On, which helps injured and disabled soldiers.
After that, we move into a hotel on September 26th, when movers will arrive to pack up all our stuff, then load it, and then move it to our new city. Then we will move into a hotel in our new city, until our new home is ready on October 13th. So we will be living in hotels for quite some time. Merlin and I have done it before, when we moved from Germany all the way to Edmonton, Alberta, and again when we moved from Alberta to Ontario. This time it will be a much closer move, but because of the closing dates on the houses, we'll still be in hotels for a long time.
Our mom is still looking for work as a registered dietitian, and is busy customizing her resume and cover letter for all the jobs she applies to. We don't mind if she stays home to be with us, but we know she would like to be working.
Until she finds a permanent job as a dietitian, she is designing scrapbook pages. She is offering her services for $10 for a page with up to 3 photos, $15 for a page with 4 or more photos. You can see her gallery here. She is able to make pages with any of the kits that you see in her gallery, and she also has some additional cat- and pet-related kits in her supplies. Wordy Wednesday
Hello friends! Today will be a wordy Wednesday, as we will catch you all up with the news on our end.
So the photo above was all three of us curled up under the comfy blanket we brought with us to the hotel. We would never have white sheets at home! They would quickly become stained with our Sphynx oils, even when washed regularly.
The good news is that our house sold! So we are back living at home until the movers come to pack things up on September 26th. Then we will be living in hotels in our current city and our new city until we take possession of our new home on October 13th, although we won't move in until the 14th.
If you read our recent news, you will know that Merlin just celebrated his 9th birthday (on September 2nd) and 7 months with cancer (on September 4th). Merlin is continuing to do well, although he is vomiting bile and having loose or bloody stools on occasion. Still, he continues to eat (thanks to the prednisolone which gives him an appetite), play, and behave perfectly normally. He's a little stressed right now because our dad had to report for duty in the new city yesterday, September 6th, but he will be home on the weekend, so that's good. Basically, he will be spending weekdays away from us in the new city and weekends home with us, until we move.
Dragonheart is unfortunately starting to chew on his gum hyperplasia mass again, so he may need to return to the vet sometime this week. Hopefully all he needs are some more painkillers, until we can get him in for a CT scan after our move.
Devi is doing well. She was on a low dose of prednisolone daily for two weeks, which seems to have cleared up her eosinophilic granulomas. She is now tapering off the prednisolone, taking one pill every other day, while continuing to eat a venison and green pea allergy wet food formula.
Our mom continues to look for a job as a registered dietitian in our new city, now that she has completed her master's degree. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be many dietitian positions open in our new city. She's applied for all the jobs she's seen posted, but none of them have called her back. She's also going to apply for PhD programs, which would start in the Fall of 2017, if she is accepted to do a PhD.
In the meantime, she is thinking of starting a digital scrapbooking for hire business, as she needs to do something to keep herself busy besides help us blog! Is this something any of you would be interested in? She is thinking of charging $10 per page for up to 4 photos, and $15 a page for 5 or more photos on a page (you would get either a 12"x12" or 8"x8" page suitable for printing, as well as a web-friendly version), and if you wanted her to use a specific kit that she does not own, you would need to pay for the kit as well (but she already has lots of kits, including some cat-specific ones). You can see her full gallery of pages (beyond the ones we've shared here) at GingerScraps. She can also do non-pet-related pages, as you can see from her gallery. Fabulous Frootbat Friday
Merlin here! Today is fabulous because our mom has finished her master's degree! She now has completed all the requirements for her Master's of Public Health in Nutrition and Dietetics. Congratulations mom! Her convocation isn't until November, so that's when she'll actually receive her parchment, but her degree is completed, and her program director has sent a letter off to the College of Dietitians of Ontario telling them that she's met all the requirements to be registered as a dietitian in Ontario.
Today is also fabulous because this means we will have a little bit of time to visit with our friends. Not a lot, because our mom and dad still have the get the house ready for painting, which starts bright and early Monday morning, but some time. I mean, they can't be tidying and cleaning the house every second of the day, right?

Words on Wednesday
Merlin here! Yay!!! :) :) :) My daddy's home! :) :) :) I'm so happy!!! I love him so much! Thank you for all the positive thoughts, prayers, and purrs that I would make it until he came back home! I'm still doing good on my cancer meds, so hopefully we will have lots of time together now that he's back!!!
Dragonheart here. I'm also very happy that daddy's home. But I'm off to the vet again today to have my sore mouth looked at. As I said yesterday, they could see some inflammation and swelling, so they are going to sedate me and take a closer look. Then they will do whatever they need to take care of it. At least I'm feeling good again since I was put back on painkillers yesterday. Thank you for all your prayers and purrs. There's always a risk with sedation, especially as I have a heart murmur, so your positive thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your prayers, purrs, positive thoughts and support over the last few months while Merlin has been fighting cancer and our daddy has been away. Hopefully our mom will have more time to help us visit all our friends now that daddy is home to help with some of the normal household chores. She will be busy in a research practicum for the next twelve weeks, but fortunately her commute is greatly reduced from that of her clinical practicum.

Sunday Selfie: Two Months with Cancer for Merlin
Merlin here! I've got one selfie this week (a little ways down), but a bunch more photos and an important milestone to talk about.
It has now been two months since my cancer diagnosis. When I was diagnosed, the internal medicine veterinarian gave me 1 to 3 months to live. So I'm two-thirds of the way through that.
I am still doing well. I purr, I play, I eat, I groom, I drink, I use the litterbox, I curl up with my brother and sister, and I pretty much act normal. If my biopsies hadn't been so definitive (and they managed to get very good biopsies of the enlarged lymph nodes in my abdomen, as well as my spleen), it would be hard to believe I have cancer.
I have thrown up a couple of times in the past week, and that always worried my mom, but it doesn't seem to bother me, and my behaviour goes back to normal after. It's also just a bit of bile, no blood or anything, so it doesn't seem to be serious.
I take my medication every evening like a good boy. Since starting the medication, my stools have been nice and firm and there's been no blood or mucus in or on them, so that's really good.
I haven't lost any weight. I'm still the solid, muscular boy of the family.
So, we continue to be hopeful that I will make it until June, when my dad returns from his deployment overseas. I really miss my dad. I'm a daddy's boy, and although mommy is wonderful, my dad is my special human. I am very proud of my dad and the work he does serving our country, but I do miss him.
Thank you all for your continued supports, purrs, prayers, and positive thoughts. We all appreciate them very much.

Marathon Monday: The Boys are Back in Town!
We are Back! We had a great week at the Katzenpension, as you can see in the photos below. We are well looked after, and had lots of wonderful cozy spots to curl up in, cat trees to climb, and toys to play with. We also had wonderful humans looking after us, feeding us, giving us fresh water, scooping our litterbox, and giving us lots of attention! As you can see in the photos below, Merlin was looking out the window, really wanting to go outside in the cat run, but it was too cold for us to venture outside. Merlin was a little jealous of the furred kitties in the room next door, who were able to go outside. He could see them in their cat run and wanted to go out in ours!
While we were at the Katzenpension, our humans were having a wonderful time in Dublin. They really enjoyed visiting the city, and running the marathon. It was our mom's slowest marathon (and our dad's too, but he was running with her at our mom's pace, and not on his own), but it was also her most enjoyable! You see, her first marathon ended up being a freakish hot, humid day, so towards the end she was walking in the sun, and running in the shade, because it was so hot and humid. For her second marathon, her stomach starting bothering her after the half-way point, so she ended up running as much as her stomach would let her, and walking when it was bad.
For this marathon, our mom had a plan: she ran with her heart rate monitor, and let it tell her how fast or slow to run. So she ended up walking on some of the hills and when they were running right into the strong wind. The weather, apart from the wind, was perfect for marathon running. Cool and cloudy, but not cold (about 8°C/46°F). But the wind was really strong in some spots. The wind never dropped below 20 km/hr (12.5 mph) and at it's strongest it was blowing at 32 km/hr (20 mph) with a few stronger gusts. Especially towards the end, the winds were really strong, and blowing right into their faces. Other than that, it was a great race. Very well organized, terrific crowd support, excellent water stops along the route, and lots of people running at our mom's slow pace, so there were always people around her and our dad!

Well, tomorrow we are off to the Katzenpension (luxury cat hotel) for a week, while our humans are in Dublin. They will be running the Dublin marathon on Monday.
At the Katzenpension we will have a room entirely to ourselves, with plenty of cubbyholes to curl up in, and cat trees to climb. Unlike in August, when we were able to use the outdoor run on a daily basis, it probably won't be warm enough for us to go outside. Merlin is disappointed, as he loved the outdoor run!
The ladies at the Katzenpension take very good care of us, and spend lots of time petting us, playing with us, and, of course, feeding us and cleaning our litterbox. They enjoy having us there, because we are so friendly and unique!
When our humans return from Dublin, our typist should have more time to help us visit our friends. She'll be taking a month off of running, focusing on swimming, strength training and group fitness (ie. aerobics) classes, and then she'll start running again. She hopes to do several triathlons next spring and summer, as well as a half-marathon or two in the spring. So she'll be focusing on triathlon training over the winter. Although that means she'll be spending a lot of time at the gym, she also promises she'll have lots of time for us to blog and visit our friends, since she won't be doing any super-long runs like she has for marathon training.
So we will be gone all next week. We may be able to sneak a post or two while our humans are gone, but that all depends on whether we can get our paws on a computer. We hope that everyone will have a safe and happy week while we are gone.

Thanks to everyone who asked about our humans' marathon. They didn't do as well as they hoped, but they get to try again in two weeks in Dublin! They didn't have a great training cycle: our dad injured his calf half-way through training, so had to take a lot of time off while it healed, and our mom has been trying to get her thyroid sorted out (she's hypothyroid, so her thyroid function is low, and they've been trying to figure out the right amount of thyroid hormone for her to take). But even though they didn't do as well as they hoped, they are happy to just be able to run marathons. So thank you for all your purrs and good luck wishes!
