We are so delighted that Merlin is here to celebrate the new year with us.  We are also very thankful for all our friends who have supported us with their purrs, prayers, and positive thoughts, over the last year.

Thankful Thursday: Christmas 2016

Hello all!  We are back from our adventure!  We are also very thankful that we had a wonderful Christmas this year.  We had not only one, but THREE Christmas celebrations.  We had our first celebration Christmas Eve morning, at home; then we went to visit our mom's family, and had Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day there; then finally we came home again and had another Christmas celebration here on the 27th!

For today, we are going to share some photos from our first Christmas celebration.  You can click on them all to view them larger.  We are very thankful to have a wonderful home and to have received such wonderful presents!  We are extremely thankful that Merlin is still here with us to celebrate!

On a more solemn note, today we also pause to remember all those who lost their lives in the First World War, as today marks the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel.  Over 700 Newfoundlanders were wounded, missing or killed on that first day of battle, and over 300 lost their lives.

Victoria Day marks the first long weekend of summer here in Canada.  It is also known as the May two-four long weekend.  Some say that is because Canadians will drink a two-four of beer  (a case of 24 beers) over the holiday weekend, but really because it is celebrated in honour of Queen Victoria, whose birthday was May 24th.  Why celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday?  Well, she was the British Monarch who reigned when Canada became a country.

Victoria Day is always celebrated on the Monday just before May 25th (so somewhere between May 18th and May 24th).

Victoria Day is celebrated throughout Canada, except in Quebec.  Quebec celebrates the Journée nationale des patriotes instead.

Good Friday

A solemn and blessed Good Friday to all our friends who observe the holy day.  A Happy Easter weekend to everyone!  We feel very blessed to have reconnected with so many of our old blogging friends, and to have met so many new friends!  We mourn all our friends who have gone to the Rainbow Bridge.

We are blessed that Merlin continues to do well, and are hopeful that he will continue to win the fight against cancer at least until our dad returns from deployment in June.

We hope all our friends who endured the freezing rain and ice storm yesterday are doing well!  We lost our power for about 2.5 hours but we were fine - nice and warm and dry.
