Easy Like Sunday Morning

Dragonheart and Merlin

Today is bath day, so we are going to enjoy the sunshine both before and after our baths, and spend some time playing as well. The only good thing about being bathed is that we get an extra serving of stinky goodness afterwards!

Easy Like Sunday Morning: For Us Cats!

While our silly humans are out running 18 miles (almost 30km), in the rain (which we think is just crazy), we are going to be relaxing, playing, wrestling, and otherwise having fun and taking it easy.

(Not So) Easy Like Sunday Morning

Our humans ran the München Stadtlauf (Munich City Run) today. They ran the half-marathon, which was 21 km (13 miles). It was very humid out, and fairly warm, but fortunately most of the course was well-shaded. The race started downtown at Marienplatz (right in front of the Rathaus - the City Hall), then they ran through the Englischer Garten, which is a huge park in the middle of Munich (with lots of shade) and then they finished back in Marienplatz.

Due to the heat, and especially the high humidity (it was 94% humidity when our humans left the house this morning), they ran very slow, but they finished! They are now going to relax for the rest of the day.

We think relaxing is good. This is what we were doing while they were running:

Easy Like Sunday Morning

While our humans are out running and biking, we are enjoying the wonderful snuggle sack that Queen Snickers and Empress sent us, that their mom made!

Some of you have asked about the weather in Munich. Usually it is quite nice, with summer temperatures in the mid-20s (Celcius) so 25-26°C (78-80°F) and reasonable humidity (50-60%). We generally have a couple of weeks of really hot weather (over 30°C or 90°F) and high humidity (80-100%). These really hot, humid weeks are nasty, since most German homes and businesses do not have air conditioning. The Germans don't "believe" in air conditioning and many consider it unhealthy. When our humans had a house hunting trip to find a place to live in Munich, our mom wanted a place with air conditioning, but they couldn't find one, because they don't exist! It is almost unheard of for a home to have air conditioning, and most hotels don't have air conditioning either. When our humans first moved to Germany and were waiting for their household effects to arrive (so they could move into their place) they were staying in hotels. Well, they arrived in the middle of a heat wave, and to find a hotel that had air conditioning, that still had rooms available, they had to go to a city North of Munich. Only a few hotels in Munich itself had air conditioning, and they were all booked up.

Our mom really suffers when it is very hot and humid, but sadly, we can't install any air conditioning unit in our home. Our windows don't open like North American windows - most German windows tilt open from the top or bottom, forming like a v-shape, or else they swing open like a door. Most windows don't have screens, so swinging them open like a door isn't an option (since we could escape). Our humans have installed fabric mesh in our windows, so that bugs don't fly inside, but we could easily get through the fabric mesh if we wanted to. So our humans generally just tilt the windows open to let air in.

There are stand alone air conditioning units available, but they all require a vent to the outside. They all have vent hoses that need to go through the walls, and vent to the outside (that's how the hot air is removed). Since our humans don't own our home (they are only renting since they are only in Germany for 4 years), they aren't allowed to cut holes in the walls for vents. The walls are also concrete, so it makes it really hard to cut holes in it, even if we were allowed (it also makes hanging things on the walls difficult!)

We are supposed to have really hot, humid weather all this week, so our mom will suffer. She does have a "cool air" unit for the bedroom - basically a fan that you put water and ice inside, and the air moves over the ice and provides some cooling that way. It's better than just a fan, but it's not as good as air conditioning.

So that's summer weather in Munich, at least since our humans moved here (summer 2006). Generally quite nice, but with a couple of weeks of nasty hot, humid, sticky weather. We already had one very hot, humid week at the end of May, and this coming week is supposed to be really hot and humid too. Then we'll probably have another week or two of the yucky weather in July and another in August, if this summer is similar to the past two summers.

(Not So) Easy Like Sunday Morning

Wrestling
As we showed you on Friday, we like to curl up together on our cat tree. But we also like to wrestle together! Wrestling is a lot of fun! So we'll probably be wrestling (and cuddling) this morning while our humans are out running 12 miles.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Dragonheart and Merlin
We both love to cuddle up with a human (Merlin typically cuddles with our dad, and Dragonheart with our mom), but when a human is not available, we like to cuddle up together.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

It's a rainy day here in Munich today, so we're going to spend some time buried under the covers, cuddling together, like we were doing on Easter.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

In most of Europe, our clocks went ahead an hour this morning. We aren't quite sure what this means, but our mom seems to think it's important.

As you can see in this photo, we have two sleeping bags.

Dragonheart and Merlin
Despite this, we often try to fit together into the same bag, even though it's a tight fit!

Easy Like Sunday Morning: Loved

Here we are both enjoying the sun. We both love the sun - it feels so good against our bare skin!

To help our friends, Sammy & Miles Meezer, and Churchill, we are having our mom create digital scrapbook pages like the one below. To find out how you can get one of these made, check out our post below. Thanks!

Easy Like Sunday Morning: Enjoying Cat Grass

Merlin: Today, we are spending Sunday playing lots and enjoying some cat grass.

Dragonheart: Today is Merlin's last day with his hoo-has. He goes in for his hoohaectomy tomorrow morning. Our humans and I are wondering if this will slow him down a little, but somehow, we don't think so.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Merlin: Dragonheart seems obsessed with cleaning my ears, so I decided to try cleaning his ears, to see what the fuss was all about. Cleaning them once was fine, but I don't see myself making a regular habit of it.

Dragonheart: Yes, I let the little guy clean my ears. He did an okay job, for a kitten. Unfortunately, he didn't clean them well enough to keep our humans from cleaning them yesterday, when we had our weekly baths. I have to confess, I wasn't very good when I had my bath yesterday. Normally, I sit fairly quietly, and let my humans bath me. Merlin is the squirmy one. Well, yesterday, about half way through my bath, I tried to climb out of the tub by climbing onto my mom's back. That wasn't a very good idea, since my dad wasn't very happy with me after that. Our humans are wondering if Merlin's being a bad influence on me, since normally I'm such a good boy at bath time.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Sunday is a great day to spend cuddled in a sleeping bag with your brother.

Thanks to everyone who has presented us with awards recently. We are horribly behind on posting about them and passing them along to others. We hope to have them assembled later this week!

Easy Like Sunday Morning & Update

Dragonheart & Merlin: This is a scrapbook page our mom made of the two of us snuggling together. This photo was taken on New Year's Day, before Dragonheart became ill.

Dragonheart: Update on me: Thank you everyone for your positive thoughts, your purrs and your prayers. We all greatly appreciate them. I am doing much better. My temperature is back to normal, I am eating, drinking, using the litterbox, running around, and playing a little bit. I am very happy to have the IV port out of my arm. It didn't bother me too much, but it was a little odd having it there. Every so often, I would try to shake it off. The vet had a bit of a challenge taking it off, since the tape adhered really well to my Sphynx skin! I am taking my antibiotics like a good boy. The two nice lady vets at the vet practice, the various veterinary technicians, and my humans have all taken very good care of me. The vet told us that with fevers as high as I had, things can go downhill very quickly, so they are all very happy that I improved so quickly and am doing so well. She thinks that I probably picked up an infection that Merlin brought with him, but that didn't affect him. Whatever it was, I'm just glad I'm doing better. Thanks again for all your good thoughts, prayers and purrs.

Dragonheart grooming Merlin
Dragonheart: Sundays are good days to groom your little brother. We are becoming good friends, and don't like to be separated from each other. We are fed in separate rooms, but when we are done eating, I come up to the door to the kitten nursery and start meowing and meowing. When the little guy finishes his meal, he sometimes meows too, unless he's too busy playing.

Merlin: The big Sphynx seems obsessed with cleaning my ears! He likes to groom all of me, but he spends a lot of time on the ears. He really tries to get them clean. I don't mind it when he starts, but after a while, it gets to be a bit too much, since he keeps grooming and grooming and grooming. If I wasn't already bald, I'm sure he'd be licking my fur off! The big Sphynx also likes to disturb me when I'm using the litterbox. Twice in the past two days I have needed to be bathed because he's disturbed me when I'm doing my business, and so I've stepped in my poo and gotten poo all over my tail, legs and feet. And then the poo has gotten on the floor, the stairs, and the bedding. I wish he would let me use the litterbox in peace! Otherwise, I really like it here. I have lots of fun toys to play with, a big brother to wrestle with, and two humans to curl up with and purr for. The big Sphynx and I both sleep with the humans at night, and I really like that. I love to burrow under the covers, or curl up in an armpit! The humans really like my purr too! I even purr when the big Sphynx grooms me.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

In this photo, I am curled up in my mom's lap, partially wrapped up in a nice, warm fleece blanket. And yes, my head is hanging upside down. :) I'm comfortable this way. :)

A bunch of you have asked about my little brother. He gets his second set of vaccinations this week, and if he is fine after them, we'll pick him up on Saturday! (Well, my humans will.) If he has a reaction to the vaccinations, we'll pick him up a week later. We are very excited and hope he will be joining our family next Saturday (the 22nd).

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Dragonheart(Click photo to view a larger image)

When one of my humans is running on the treadmill, they like to crack open the patio door in the living room so that they have some fresh air circulating through the house. When they do that, I like to burrow under the covers to stay nice and toasty warm. That's what I'm doing in this photo, all warm and cozy under the blankets.
