#6 - 13 Cat-Related Words in German

Since I provided a brief introduction to some German cat-related words in "My Big Adventure" post, I thought I would make a list of handy words for cats to know auf Deutsch (in German). Note that all nouns in German have a gender: masculine, feminine or neuter. The article indicates the gender: der is masculine, das is neuter, die is feminine or plural.
  1. Cat - die Katze, plural: die Katzen

  2. Tom (male cat who has not been neutered) - der Kater

  3. Queen (female cat who has not been spayed) - die Kätzin

  4. Kitten - das Kätzchen

  5. Veterinarian - der Tierarzt (for a male vet), die Tierärztin (for a female vet)

  6. Litterbox - das Katzenklo or die Katzentoilette

  7. Cat litter - das Katzenstreu or die Katzenstreu

  8. Cat food - das Katzenfutter

  9. Scratching post - der Kratzbaum

  10. Catnip - die Katzenminze

  11. Cat toy - das Katzenspielzeug

  12. Wand toy - die Spielangel

  13. Treats - die Katzensnacks (plural)

I'm sure that knowing the German for litter box will be incredibly helpful in my political dealings... or maybe it will just be helpful to know a little German. I'm sure I can turn the conversation to the words I know...

Kewl! But, how do you know if the cat litter is neuter or female? All I know is it's dirty or clean.

Why call treats anyfing but Temptations??? Ok, Bonnie calls them "NOW!!!"

Mom knows a little Spanish an confirmed French is too hard fur her.

thanks Dragonheart! I'm printing these so I'll remember. How do you say "handsome" like, Dragonheart is a handsome kitty??? My mommy just wants to scoop you up and give you squishy face (she kisses your nose and you scrunch up your face - that is how it works in our house)

I just read your mommy's blog and your family blog. You are all so nice! Your mommy does lotsa running huh? My mommy walks, but running hurts her back so she walks for the cure (cancer walk).

It was fun reading about your family!
