Happy Canada Day!
We would like to wish all the Canadian Cats, and their families, no matter where they are in the World, a very Happy Canada Day!
What is Canada Day? Canada Day is Canada's National Holiday, celebrated on July 1st. It commemorates the formation of Canada under the British North America Act on July 1st, 1867. Up until 1982, the holiday was officially known as Dominion Day (in reference to the designation of the country as a Dominion in the British North America Act, 1867) but had been popularly called "Canada Day" for many years. The name was officially changed to Canada Day on October 27, 1982, a move largely inspired by the adoption of the Canada Act, earlier in the year, in which Canada achieved total legislative independence from the United Kingdom.
Canada Day is celebrated by Canadians across the world. There are celebrations from coast to coast in Canada, and celebrations at Canadian embassies and missions throughout the world. Canadian Heritage has a list of celebrations across the country. The largest celebration takes place in Ottawa and the entire National Capital Region. When our humans lived in Ottawa, they would run the "Run for Canada" 10K race on Canada Day in the early morning, then enjoy whatever other celebrations were taking place in the city, culminating in the fireworks displays in the evening. From 7:30 to 10:30 PM, EDT, the Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa, on Parliament Hill, can be viewed on the web.
Canada Day is a day to celebrate our wonderful country of Canada! Happy Canada Day!
